As the nuclear arms control treaty, New START, between the U.S. and Russia has expired this month and the danger of nuclear weapons use is increasing, WILPF-Canada and VOW have sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney and Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand to urge them to show leadership on nuclear disarmament. We reminded them that Canada must fulfill its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). The 11th Review Conference of the Parties will take place at the United Nations in New York this April. We call on the federal government to send a strong delegation with civil society experts and take meaningful steps to implement Article 6 of the NPT to “pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament.”
