Canada-China Focus is pleased to present writer and activist Satoko Oka Norimatsu’s live report from Okinawa on the new U.S. military facility under construction and Okinawans’ resistance to the project, in conversation with Professor Hideki Yoshikawa, expert on Okinawan social and environmental issues. This event will take place virtually on zoom.
Satoko Oka Norimatsu is co-author with Gavan McCormack of Resistant Islands: Okinawa Confronts Japan and the United States (Rowman & Littlefield, 2012; an updated paperback version was published in the spring of 2018). She is a regular contributor to Ryukyu Shimpo, Choson Shinbo, and the Independent Speech Forum. She is an editor for the Asia-Pacific Journal: Japan Focus. Hideki Yoshikawa is an anthropologist and adjunct lecturer at the University of the Ryukyus and Meio University in Okinawa, Japan. He also serves as Director of the Okinawa Environmental Justice Project and International Director of the Save the Dugong Campaigning Center. His academic research and civil society work focus on the environmental impacts of U.S. military bases in Okinawa.
