WILPF-Canada and the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) wrote to Prime Minister Carney and to Minister of Foreign Affairs Anand to express our disappointment that Canada abstained on the United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) vote to decide whether to proceed with a debate on “the necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.” Regrettably, Canada was one of only thirty countries that abstained whereas 136 countries, the vast majority of UN members, voted in favour of having a discussion about Cuba’s suffering under the cruel, illegal U.S. blockade since 1962.
We call on the Carney government to support Cuba and to send food, fuel and medical supplies and other aid to the island nation, which has been a long-time friend to Canada. We say end the Canadian travel advisory against Cuba and end the U.S. blockade!
