TORONTO Rally “Cut Military Spending for a Green, Peace Care Economy”

Join us for a rally to mark Earth Day and Global Campaign Against Military Spending! The peace rally is organized by the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace & the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom-Canada. The Liberal government under Trudeau and Carney has massively increased military spending from $20 billion in 2014 to $62 billion in 2025 according to the latest NATO Defence Expenditures report. The government has announced reckless plans to further boost the military budget to $150 billion annually by 2035 to reach NATO’s 5% GDP, which will worsen global warming and risk war.
Worse still, while the federal government is increasing military spending, it is cutting $60 billion in crucial federal programs including Environment & Climate Change Canada, Fisheries & Oceans, Agriculture, Natural Resources, Crown & Indigenous Relations & other departments. As the Canadian Climate Institute has reported, Canada is not on track to meet its Paris Agreement target to halve carbon emissions and has not met any of the targets under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Carney is giving more money to the military, which is the largest consumer of fossil fuel and the biggest emitter of carbon emissions in the federal government. Though the Carney government has announced $3.8 billion for its Nature Strategy over five years, it has also announced $470 billion for its destructive Defence Industrial Strategy over the next decade for carbon-intensive and environmentally-destructive militarism.
We are calling on the Minister of Environment MP Julie Dabrusin to cut military spending and move the money to a just transition to renewable energy and a green, peace care economy that protects the earth and improves the lives of Canadians.
