The NATO Summit in Ankara has ended by padding the pockets of the transatlantic, male-dominated military industrial complex with public funds while impoverishing the rest us.
NATO announced $70 billion more to prolong the proxy war in Ukraine this year, but not one dollar to end it.
At the NATO Summit, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced huge arms deals for long-range strike missiles and armoured vehicles for the Canadian Armed Forces and more ammunition and military assistance to Ukraine and an extension of Canada’s Operation REASSURANCE, a provocative and dangerous military presence in eastern Europe. He also announced that Canada would host the NATO Industry Forum in 2027. This costly, carbon-intensive militarism exacerbates conflict and the climate crisis.
Listen to the lies of the NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in his final closing press conference: Rutte said (1) “NATO is a defensive alliance,” no, it attacked and destroyed Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Libya (2) “The war in Ukraine is totally unprovoked,” no, it was provoked by NATO expansion, the coup in Kyiv in 2014, etc.
In the final NATO declaration, there was not one mention of climate change and the deadly heat wave killing Europeans – the climate crisis and poverty are the real security threats to people not Russia.
